DBT Skills Training

Additional Information

DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy.  DBT Skills Training is structured to enhance your capabilities to become more successful in relationships, in the workplace and in life.  DBT has a strong psychoeducational approach designed to provide skills for managing intense emotions and negotiating social relationships. DBT is also evidence-based and has a host of research to back up it's effectiveness.

DBT was created by psychologist Marsha Linehan, PhD, in the 1980s for people with suicidal thoughts who also were diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or Complex Trauma. Since then, DBT has been shown to be effective in also helping people with substance abuse, eating disorders, self harm tendencies or suicidal thoughts. Linehan's full DBT program involves learning the core skills, completing worksheets and daily dairy cards to monitor progress in learning and using skills.  The dialectic part of DBT refers to the ideas that all things are connected, change is constant and inevitable,  and opposites can be integrated or synthesized to provide balance.

With RTPC's DBT skills training, you learn new behavioral skills and strengthen skills you already possess. You learn core DBT skills like validation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT may be taught in individual therapy, group therapy, or in family therapy sessions.
